STATIVE VERBS

STATIVE VERBS....

Some English verbs, which we call state, non-continuous or stative verbs, aren't used in continuous tenses (like the present continuous, or the future continuous). These verbs often describe states that last for some time. Here is a list of some common ones:

A verb which isn't stative is called a dynamic verb, and is usually an action.

likeknowbelong

hatesupposecontain
wantmeanconsist

satisfypromisesurprise
doubtthink (=have an opinion)feel (=have an opinion)
wishimagineconcern
dislikebehave

lackmeasure (=have length etc)possess
oweweigh (=have weight)
A verb which isn't stative is called a dynamic verb, and is usually an action.
Some verbs can be both stative and dynamic:
Be
be is usually a stative verb, but when it is used in the continuous it means 'behaving' or 'acting'
  • you are stupid = it's part of your personality
  • you are being stupid = only now, not usually
Think
  • think (stative) = have an opinion
I think that coffee is great
  • think (dynamic) = consider, have in my head
what are you thinking about? I'm thinking about my next holiday
Have
  • have (stative) = own
    I have a car
  • have (dynamic) = part of an expression
    I'm having a party / a picnic / a bath / a good time / a break
See
  • see (stative) = see with your eyes / understand
    I see what you mean
I see her now, she's just coming along the road
  • see (dynamic) = meet / have a relationship with
I've been seeing my boyfriend for three years

Activity 2 - Intermediate 6 (I06) 3:15 pm class: Ghosts...are they real?

Do you believe in ghosts or spirits?

People are always telling us about different stories that involve ghosts or spirits, we even have videos that show ghosts sightings but are they real? We don't know about that. I don't really believe in ghosts but I do believe that our spirits have an after life.

Check this video and post your opinion about this topic. Have you ever experienced something paranormal?

Activity 2 - Intermediate 6 (I06) 8:45 am class: UFOs...

Do they really exist?...

A lot people say they have seen these mysterious unknown flying objects but are they real?
Do we really have enough evidence to prove they really do exist.

Watch this short clip about some UFOs sightings and post your opinion about it. Do you believe there is life in other planets? Do you believe in UFOs? Have you ever experienced something paranormal like this?

Activity 1 - Intermediate 3 (I03) 6:45 pm class: Feeling sick again??

Being sick :(

It happens to all of us, it's something we can not avoid. Feeling sick is just part of our nature, sometimes it's something mild but sometimes it's severe. We all have to be careful and take care of ourselves.

Try not to drink to many cold drinks in the summer and try not to wear summer clothing in the winter, these are just two of the many advice we usually receive to avoid getting sick.

Activity:

Go to the following webpage and read the article about being sick, complete the activities and post here your thoughts about the article, did you like it?. Also write 3 sentences with the new vocabulary learnt and finally write about one of your own experiences about being sick.

Activity 1 - Intermediate 6 (I06) 3:15 pm class: Ads, Ads, Ads everywhere...

Ads and more ads...

It's amazing the power of the ads on the streets, it seems that wherever you go, you find different kind of ads.

They are out there for many reasons and the media has developed an interesting way of showing them everywhere we go. They are meant for selling, promoting, advertising, and more.

I remember the time I went to the south beaches and I just couldn't believe the number of ads on the road, they kept distracting all the people who were in the car, it was even dangerous.

Go to the following page, read and check all the ads thar are shown there.
